My mother was a farm wife and a prodigious canner. She canned fruit and vegetables from the garden, even occasionally meat. But the best thing that she canned, in my opinion, was blackberry jam. Even as I type those words my mouth waters! Of course, before she could make that jam, somebody had to pick the blackberries. And that somebody was quite often named Dorothy. I think Seamus Heaney might have spent some time among the briars plucking those delicious black fruits as well, so he would have known that "Once off the bush the fruit fermented, the sweet flesh would turn sour." They don't keep; you have to get that jam made in a hurry! Blackberry-Picking by Seamus Heaney Late August, given heavy rain and sun For a full week, the blackberries would ripen. At first, just one, a glossy purple clot Among others, red, green, hard as a knot. You ate that first one and its flesh was sweet Like thickened wine: summer's blood was in it Leaving stains upon the tongue and lust ...
Oh, they are gorgeous! Do they last?
ReplyDeleteEach blossom only lasts a day - thus, DAYlily. But each plant has multiple buds that can bloom over a period of weeks.
Deletehow pretty. Our Iris are in bloom now
ReplyDeleteI love iris, too. I'm hoping my butterfly iris will give me another good season of blooms this year as it did last year.
DeleteBeautiful! My Mini Pearl is getting ready to bloom. Seems like I just place this order and now they are going to bloom. I ordered from Oakes, the company Susan Brownmiller used for her daylilies on her balcony in NY. Oakes has an amazing selection and I was very pleased with each plant (HUGE).
ReplyDelete'Mini Pearl' - gotta love that name! I've never ordered from Oakes, but thanks for the heads-up. I'll add them to my list.
DeleteWow - you have some real beauties, Dorothy!
ReplyDeleteI do love my daylilies.
DeleteThey are so beautiful. I am going to come back and look at them several times today.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy!
DeleteLovely, Dorothy! I also used to have detailed maps with all the names but time disrupts all that, so I don't remember many names either. Here it is iris, rose, and rhododendron season, only the Lemon lilies are blooming, at least I always know what they are. The daylilies should start soon.
ReplyDeleteSloppy record-keeping is the bane of my gardening experience, but I enjoy the blooms even when I don't know their names.
