In the beginning, Rebus really was a bit of an asshole but he has mellowed somewhat through the years while still retaining his edge. The first time I met Rankin at The Poisoned Pen, he told us that the series didn't start to click until <i>Black and Blue</i>. I've always meant to start again with that one to see what would happen. Not all characters slick with me even when I want them to.
